“So what did you think?”
Role Models wasn’t the movie I thought it was going to be, which is good, considering I wasn’t expecting much.
The heart of Role Models is in it’s characters and their actors. Let’s start with Stifler (Sean William Scott) who is basically starts the moving playing Stifler light but as the movie progresses he manages to actually give his character some sense maturity and responsibility. It’s by no means an Oscar worthy performance but it’s surprising considering the actor and the kind of movie he’s in. More importantly, it’s enjoyable.
A majority of the film focuses on Paul Rudd and he delivers, though, his character’s maturation seems more manufactured than Stiflers (go figure). I think it had something to do with the fact that his character is an asshole and it’s always hard to redeem an asshole. He manages to make it somewhat work and he does carry a lot of the comedic weight of the film with his slick one liners.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse basically gives us a geekier McLovin. He does well though to give his character a more dimension than what’s probably asked for from his character. He also does pretty well delivering some jokes and manages to rise above just being a funny looking guy. Bobb’e J Thompson is funny, he actually manages to out Stifler Stifler, but if you pay attention he also manages to act well enough to give his character an age appropriate sense of innocence (or maybe he’s just young, either way, it works).
Elizabeth Banks is in this one too but it’s a small part and doesn’t require much. Jane Lynch is also pretty funny and a little odd. As far as side characters go though, I enjoyed Dr.Ken’s the most; he just looks funny.

The story itself was nothing new but it moved at a good pace and never forced any of the humor.
The jokes themselves were actually really good and pretty original. The movie doesn’t rely on grossness, nudity or even vulgarity to be funny and that’s pretty refreshing. Sure, some of that stuff is in the movie to a degree but it’s not the driving force of the movie’s comedy.

So all in all, Role Models is good fun and worth a watch.
